Portrait B-2

Reference Photo 8x10 Arches 150-lb cold press

The reference for this watercolor came from the WetCanvas site reference library. The portrait was done in my weekly portrait class taking around a month to complete. I painted all but the background, which the teacher finished. The way the light hit her face was what attracted me to this particular portrait. It took quite awhile to get the eyes looking correct. The scarf was the easiest. It was done wet-on-wet dropping in colors.

Evergreens

In this weeks watercolor class, we were given a tiny pencil sketch of a evergreen tree covered with snow. Sometimes my teacher does this. She wants us to use our imagination to complete a painting. I tried to remember all the techniques I'd learn in another class - creative drawing - and apply them to this painting. I was pleased with the results. Sometimes a painting works.

Storm's Coming

Storm's Coming 11x15 2009 Watercolor.

This was an interesting painting to work on. It was done in a two-hour class I'm taking. We had a small color photo to work from. Our assignment was to work wet-n-wet and use only two colors, Winsor Blue and Brown Madder. I quickly drew in my composition and ran the quarter sheet under the hot water tab. I started laying in paint watching it spread. I had to quickly wipe up sections where the dark pigment edged into the areas I wanted to leave white. I could have had a better drawing, but all in all, I pleased with the results.

Boy Fishing

I found this reference in a book filled with old black and white photo's. I really liked the way the light showed on the little boy's face. I also liked the simplicity of the photo. I wasn't sure, however, if I could capture that light in a watercolor.

Boy Fishing 10x14 2009

As it turned out, the boy was the easiest part. The background and the boat was harder. For one thing, the boat needed change to make for a better composition. I added another seat and a fishing bag.

House Down the Road

I painted this 11x15 watercolor a few years ago. I'm putting it on this blog because it is how I with I could paint all landscapes. I love the watercolor feel that I captured. To me this says, "watercolor".

A strawberry in the Nick of Time

There are days - and sometimes weeks - when I can't seem to paint anything at all. When this happens, I go back to paint something that I've had success with. Strawberries are such a subject - especially with the blossoms and negative paintings.

Bird's Nest in Watercolor

I did this watercolor of a bird's nest in a tree during my weekly watercolor class. It is not really what I wanted to accomplish and I had to make lemonade out of a large lemon. What I don't like about it is the large horizontal tree at the bottom - and the fact that the nest is kind of floating in the air. It did, however, give me an inspiration to start a painting of a similar subject, hopefully with a better composition.
